first quarter of the 20th century, with round 20in. barrel, the top-flat signed with the maker's address and patent dates to 1893, the left hand side marked 'SPECIAL SMOKELESS STEEL', block and blade fore-sight, folding ladder rear-sight , slab-sided receiver, the top marked 'MARLIN SAFETY', provision for peep-sight to the wrist, walnut butt-stock with iron heel-plate (filled inlet from a removed swivel-mount), iron finger-lever, plain walnut fore-end and full-length magazine tube, much blued finish and traces of colour to receiver
